Re: Connecting responsive design and target size

Hello Daniel,

Sorry for the late response. This week is being a bit stressing.

In relation to your comments. I agree that "responsive design" is broad and tricky, and it should be included as a reference not as an outcome.

Reasoning: The term "responsive design" may help designers to establish a connection with "target sizes", as designers might not be that familiar with the term "target sizes".

In any case, I leave this to editors discretion.

Best.

Subject: Connecting responsive design and target size

Hey Estella,

Thanks for your comments yesterday on connecting responsive design and target size. It was a good discussion.

I think the connection with responsive design can be broader (and a bit trickier) than we discussed yesterday. For an accessible user experience, you have to take care of additional elements in addition to using responsive design techniques. For example content sequence, focus indicators, customization, and target size.

I have now taken a pass at

https://wai-curricula.netlify.app/curricula/designer-modules/visual-design/#topic-flexible-layouts<https://wai-curricula.netlify.app/curricula/designer-modules/visual-design/%23topic-flexible-layouts>

and included references to responsive design in

* Introductory paragraph

"Explain that, in addition to using techniques such as responsive design, other elements, including content sequence, focus indicators, and target sizes need to adapt to different screen sizes, screen configurations, and style sheets for an accessible user experience".

In learning outcomes, fourth bullet, we could have something like

"design layouts with target sizes that adapt to different screen sizes, screen configurations, and style sheets, for example when creating responsive designs"

But I don't think it works for the reasons discussed above. It is not just target size that relates to responsive design techniques, but the rest of the contents in this topic as well. I think the first reference to responsive design in the introduction conveys the idea better.

Do you have other suggestions to build this connection?

Best.
