I was traveling last week and unable to send the 1-8 March digest. This is the 8-15 March 2013 edition of a “weekly digest of W3C news and trends" that the W3C Communications Team prepares for the W3C Membership and public-w3c-digest mailing list (publicly archived [1]) [sent separately]. This digest aggregates information about W3C from online media, a snapshot of how W3C and its work is perceived in online media. [1] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-w3c-digest/ Notably this week : - 1300 stories about W3C on Twitter in 7 days. - over 3300 mentions of W3C in 7 days, with 14 Mar (1830 mentions). - 17 posts that dlvr.it posted between Mar 03 - Mar 10 got 29.2K clicks and reached 66K connections. - With 56886 Twitter followers, net increase of 1009 followers in the past 2 weeks. Below is the compilation of what I harvested monitoring the (micro)blogosphere and press. W3C-related Twitter buzz ------------------------ [Things that were tweeted frequently, things that caught my attention, etc. Most *recent* first (popularity is flagged with the figure between parenthesis —that is the number of times the same URIs or tweet was quoted/RTed.] * (72) #mlwrome workshop: Making the Multilingual Web Work, 12-13 Mar. <http://topsy.com/s/mlwrome?window=w> * (54) .net mag: Hot in web standards: January/February 2013, by Lea Verou <http://www.netmagazine.com/features/hot-web-standards-januaryfebruary-2013> * DRM in HTML5 controversy: (81) Boingboing: Why Tim Berners-Lee is wrong about DRM in HTML5 <http://boingboing.net/2013/03/12/why-tim-berners-lee-is-wrong-a.html> (702) Guardian: What I wish Tim Berners-Lee understood about DRM <http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2013/mar/12/tim-berners-lee-drm-cory-doctorow> (72) W3C Blog: DRM and the Open Web, by Wendy Seltzer <http://www.w3.org/QA/2013/03/drm_and_the_open_web.html> * (25) Call for Review: HTML Image Description Extension (longdesc) <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-ig/2013JanMar/0148.html> * (440) Engadget: Samsung's latest Chromebook now supports Netflix courtesy of HTML5 streaming <http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/11/samsung-chromebook-netflix-html5-streaming/> * (101) Good E-Reader: The Future of Digital Publishing – The Synergy between HTML5 and EPUB 3 <http://goodereader.com/blog/electronic-readers/the-future-of-digital-publishing-the-synergy-between-html5-and-epub-3/> * (57) Firefox gets native HTML5 video play speed modifiers <http://www.ghacks.net/2013/03/09/firefox-gets-native-html5-video-play-speed-modifiers/> * Video codec: (64) John Gruber’s blog: Google Admits WebM Infringes H.264 Patents <http://daringfireball.net/linked/2013/03/11/google-webm> (26) W3C Blog: Good News about VP8 Licensing, by Jeff Jaffe <http://www.w3.org/QA/2013/03/good_news_about_vp8_licensing.html> (24) FOSS Patents: Patent clouds remain over VP8: Google points to FRAND option, Nokia alleges infringement in court <http://www.fosspatents.com/2013/03/patent-clouds-remain-over-vp8-google.html> * (53) SW Blog: Linked Data Platform 1.0 Draft Published, by Ivan Herman <http://www.w3.org/blog/SW/2013/03/09/linked-data-platform-1-0-draft-published-2/> * (247) BI: HTML5 vs. Apps: Here's Why The Debate Matters, And Who Will Win <http://www.businessinsider.com/html5-vs-apps-heres-why-the-debate-matters-and-who-will-win-2013-3> * (34) W3C Blog: Adding alpha channels or chroma keys to JPEG images, by Dave Raggett <http://www.w3.org/QA/2013/03/adding_alpha_channels_or_chrom.html> * (125) ALA: W3C is Getting Some Work Done, by Ian Jacobs <http://alistapart.com/column/w3c-is-getting-some-work-done> W3C in the Press (or blogs) --------------------------- 16 articles mixing news on HTML5, DNT, WebRTC, digital publishing as well as a few interviews that Tim Berners-Lee gave while attending SxSW Interactive this week.
