RE: VC spec and DIDs vs. VCs?

RE: 2. What is the best reference for the differences (goals/purpose/drivers) between: (a) DIDs (and DID Entities/Documents), and (b) Verifiable Credentials?

Reading https://w3c.github.io/vc-data-model/, is it correct that a DID (the string identifier) can be used anywhere that an "id" attribute appears in a VC?

For example,

  * The id of the VC itself: https://w3c.github.io/vc-data-model/
  * The id of the verifiableCredential (most common use case in the VC data model document)
  * Other role-based id's: owner, parent, child, holder, etc.
  * The id of a claim
  *   ...

Please confirm:

  1.  Is the above correct?
  2. Is this the extent of the integration between DIDs and VCs?

1. Is this (the most current version of) the Verifiable Credentials "spec"?
