Yes, there has been a lot of research on this, and gestures plus speech have a big future. It is feasible to recognize simple hand gestures using conventional web cams, but you really need very large screens to make it pay off. There are also concerns over fatigue when fine movements need to be frequently repeated. However that also applies to today's mouse and trackpad.
