HbbTV liaison draft

Dear all,

As discussed on our last conference call, please see below a draft liaison to send to HbbTV. I plan to send a similar message to DVB, with some adjustments.

Please let me know if you have any comments or suggested changes. To allow time for review and feedback, I expect to wait until after new year to send these liaisons.

Many thanks,

Chris (WG Chair)

I write on behalf of the W3C TV Control Working Group, which is currently developing the TV Control API specification [1]. This specification aims to provide a way of sourcing broadcast and IPTV delivered media (including both TV and radio) into the browser that is closely integrated with HTML5 and the web platform in general. The API enables TV and radio media playback through the familiar <video> and <audio> element interfaces, and also provides access to program information (EPG), program recording and playback, parental control, emergency alert events, and triggered interactive overlays.

For consistency with other web platform APIs, the TV Control API builds upon existing W3C work, such as WebRTC MediaStream, and the Working Group is currently working to align the API better with the rest of the web platform, and to bring a higher level of abstraction that is less coupled to specific device implementation details than the current published Editor's Draft.

We hope the TV Control API can become a useful reference for a future revision of HbbTV. We would like ask whether this is of interest to you, and to encourage HbbTV members to join the Working Group to further the standardisation of the API. The Working Group's current charter ends on 31 March 2017, so we are now starting rechartering discussions. By end of January 2017 we expect to submit an updated charter and timelime to W3C management for approval. We ask for HbbTV members' support in re-chartering of the group after March 2017.
