All, During today's meeting I mentioned a document that my colleague Chris Bass from BBC R&D wrote on the span background issue, which may provide useful background, including describing the wanted behaviour, the current specification (via XSL-FO etc) and rendering, and a possible proposed solution, with a short analysis of the impact on implementation and on TTML2. The document was first written for submission to the EBU's Subtitles in XML group, and proposes a backgroundHeight attribute in an ebutts namespace, however there is no reason why that could not be put into a tts namespace if it is adopted at all - noting that as discussed today there seems to be little opportunity to change the definition of the background area from being the padding rectangle.
