http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-to-use-host-card-emulation-hce-for-nfc-based-mobile-payments/ This development shouldn't be interpreted as SEs are useless, I think it rather opens the payment market for new forms of SEs like U2F and SKS which were designed for the web and operate at a much higher level than 7816. Making an SE API for all kinds of SEs is IMO undoable due to middleware issues unless it builds on that the server do the middleware as well (like SConnect). However, the latter effectively means that the client (platform) isn't a part of the plot and then things gets rather murky. JavaCard 3 which supports an embedded web-server was launched a decade ago and still haven't got any traction so this seems to be a dead end. Anders
