I’ve just published a new repo [1] that includes demo code showing how timed metadata can be accessed with DataCue using the WebVMT sync command.

There are several working examples that highlight some of the design choices available and explain how these might relate to particular use cases - including stage lighting. I can’t promise that these will answer all your questions, but I hope that they help you explore the possibilities.
