All, Last Friday, we discussed elements that are used for hit regions and how line like elements should be navigated or/presented to users with assistive technologies. Chaals was mentioning the ability to visit vertices and be able to jump between lines at the same x value. Chaals indicated that visual users can do similar things using their eyes or if the lines are broken up with hit regions, using a mouse. In the RAVE chart renderer, our first attempt at providing descriptions of lines for AT included naming the category (lines are usually split by a categorical variable), providing the min and max Y vertices and then rattling off the set of data values in the line. This approach wasn't very usable once the number of vertices in a line became large. The experience was similar to looking at an SVG path element d attribute and trying to understand the shape. This is not a similar experience to seeing the rendered path. What we ended up using was reporting the category, min and max y, starting point, reporting the sign (positive, negative, horizontal) of the slope and reported the vertices where the slope changed sign or went flat (+,-, 0) and the end point. This is more similar to getting online map directions. I don't remember if we were smart enough to limit the number of reported slope changes to 7 or less or not. If you have lots of micro changes like a stock price has, eliminating the micro changes and only reporting the trends is desirable. If you are an academic, you might want to think of how to report a sine curve... When we wanted to provide a set of values along the line (similar to the hit regions we were discussing) we added a points element using the same data. This was a pretty common request, so we made a special element for it (line with points), so the points (vertices) of the line and the line were in a single data group. The points provided the hit regions with the individual values. The result in the accessibility tree was you got the line with it's description then the big list of points. If you wanted the hit regions to be spaced differently than the line vertices, you could do that by using two elements one for the line and the second for the spaced points. Probably the spaced points would use a derived data set, rather than the original data set used by the line. Summary: Reporting all vertex values for lines isn't desirable when there are a lot of vertices (> 7). Reporting a line as map like directions is a reasonable approach for AT. Can use alternate elements to provide information about vertices or sections along a line. Hit regions and focus In a scatterplot, if a hit region contains the <title> (tooltip) and/or action (ie link), then it seems like it should be in the accessibility tree rather than the symbol (which could be argued is only presentational). However when you show visible focus, you would want the focus to be on the symbol and not the hit region.
