Yes, I was also lead to this conclusion by James Anderson who had 
emailed me privately about this. So thanks to the both of you for the help!

I was surprised to learn this about SPARQL given that the SPARQL book 
that I have

didn't seem to mention this. But then I realized that I didn't have the 
latest version which does mention it.
