This is also how rdflib (2.4's) SPARQL library handles default graphs. However, there is a 'DAWG' compatibility switch (which is false by default) that will cause it to follow the specification and distinguish the default graph from the other named graphs. This is only done solely for the sake of compliance, and so I also agree that the whole unnamed/default graph thing is not very useful.
