Hello everyone,

The translation of Raph's blog is live, I still need to check on language (you might want to help too) but Raph published it already.

https://30x.nl/background-accessibility-regulation.htm

Raph was happily surprised on personal responses from some of our team members!

Also, and this is really nice, Raph wants to join the group (although needs to get permission from the government, probably no big deal).
He might join Wednesday already, need to inform him on the details, and otherwise I'll meet him in person anyway Thursday as we're both interviewed on location so I can talk to him on details.

Have a good weekend ya'll!

Met vriendelijke groet / Kind Regards,

Jake Abma

Hi all,

Today we've talked through the approach for complying with WCAG / accessibility in Europe and for the Dutch government in particular.

One of the people involved is Raph de Rooij, policy director ministry of internal affairs, who wrote a thesis on the topic.
Raph graduated on this subject at the university and is/was part of the WG for the European Standard and research project.

Hereby some of his work to go through where a conclusion / summary is that you'll need to make maturity part of the accessibility process for IT products, not only the technical pass / fail / conformance.

In the meeting I promised to send you all the files discussed so we can go through them and see how and what we might want to use for our cause.

Last but not least, I will ask Raph if he is interested and has the time to join the group.

About the background of the new accessibility obligation

For many governments, the date September 23, 2020 marks the entry into force of a legal accessibility requirement. And the end of a process to improve the accessibility of the website and to publish an accessibility statement about this.

But the date also marks the beginning of a new perspective on digital accessibility. Before September 23, 2020 it seemed so simple: there was a standard for accessibility (WCAG 2.0) and the obligation was that that standard had to be met. Because how complicated can it be to apply a standard?

ABSTRACT

What if a website owner cannot reliably claim full conformance with the web accessibility specification mentioned in the policy? The answer may lie in also addressing the non-technical issues that stand in the way of fully conforming, since these are the kind of issues for policy makers, managers and supervisors.
