  Call for Main Conference Papers

The AIME 2019 conference invites all interested researchers to submit 
original contributions regarding the development of theory, methods, 
systems, and applications of AI in biomedicine, including the 
application of AI approaches in biomedical informatics, healthcare 
organization and molecular medicine.


    Scope

Contributions to theory and methods should present or analyze novel AI 
theories or methodologies for solving problems in the biomedical field. 
They may propose new theories and methods or extensions of existing 
ones. In both cases, the work should demonstrate its utility for solving 
biomedical problems and highlight its contribution to the underlying 
theoretical basis. In addition, it should discuss assumptions, 
limitations and novelty with respect to the state of the art.

Contributions addressing systems and applications should describe the 
development, implementation or evaluation of innovative, AI-based tools 
and systems in the biomedical application domain. These papers should 
both link the work to underlying theory, and either analyze the 
potential benefits to solve biomedical problems or present empirical 
evidence of benefits in clinical practice.

The scope of the conference includes the following areas:

    Big data analytics,

  *

    Machine learning, knowledge discovery and data mining,

  *

    Biomedical ontologies and terminologies,

  *

    Biomedical knowledge acquisition and management,

  *

    Knowledge-based reasoning in biomedicine,

  *

    Natural language processing,

  *

    Document classification and information retrieval,

  *

    Bayesian networks, fuzzy logic and reasoning under uncertainty,

  *

    Temporal and spatial representation and reasoning,

  *

    Healthcare processes and workflow management,

  *

    Computerized clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and protocols,

  *

    Biomedical imaging and signal processing,

  *

    Visual analytics in biomedicine,

  *

    Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs),

  *

    Patient engagement support (personal healthcare record),

  *

    AI solutions for ambient assisted living, telemedicine and e-health.


    Submission

Papers should be submitted to the AIME19 Easy Chair Website 
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aime2019). Authors are asked 
first to submit an abstract (maximum 250 words), the full paper may be 
uploaded up to two weeks later (please see Important Dates below).

The submission website will be open from October 1, 2018.

The conference features regular papers in two categories (please note if 
you submit a paper as a student):

 1.

    Fullresearch papers (up to 10 pages)

 2.

    Shortpapers (up to 5 pages) and Demopapers (1 page) describing either

  *

    a short research project,

  *

    a demonstration of implemented systems, or

  *

    late-breaking results (work-in-progress).

Papers should be formatted according to Springer's LNCS format (see 
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html).

All accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings which will 
be published as part of Springer's Lecture Notes in AIseries. In 
addition, the authors of the best submissions will be invited to expand 
and refine their papers for possible publication in the Artificial 
Intelligence in Medicinejournal (Elsevier).

Presentations will include long (25 minutes: 20 minutes presentation, 5 
minutes discussion) and short presentations (5 minutes: 3 minutes 
presentation, 2 minutes discussion).

Posters (A1 size, 594mm x 841mm) will be displayed in two series, a 
poster walk (2 minute local presentation) will be organized.

Demos of applications are welcome, there will be opportunities for 
presenting software to individuals and small groups of participants.


    Mario Stefanelli and Marco Ramoni Best Paper Awards

The best student paperwill receive an award honoring Mario Stefanelli 
from the University of Pavia and his accomplishments. Mario Stefanelli 
was one of the founders of the AIME community, an inspiration to us all, 
and actively helped in advancing young researchers in our field. The 
best student paper will be valued by the Program Committee based on the 
quality of both, the paper and the oral presentation at the conference.

The best paper in bioinformaticswill receive an award honoring Marco 
Ramoni. Marco Ramoni was an outstandingly respected faculty member at 
Harvard, USA, and contributed to significant advances in the biomedical 
informatics field. The best paper in bioinformatics will be valued by 
the Program Committee based on the scientific quality of the paper.

  Call for Workshop, Tutorial and Demo Proposals

As in previous AIME conferences, proposals for the organization of 
satellite workshops, tutorials, and demos regarding any of the topic 
areas of the the AIME 2019 conference are invited.


    Submission

Proposals for workshops, tutorials, and demos should be sent by emailto 
David Riaño (david.riano@urv.cat) <mailto:david.riano@urv.cat>. Each 
proposal should include the following elements:

  *

    Title,

  *

    Chair(s): name, affiliation, e-mail address, homepage, and short
    (one paragraph), biography of each chair, explaining the chair's
    expertise for the event (workshop/tutorial/demo),

  *

    Abstract: a summary of max. 200 words describing the purpose of the
    workshop/tutorial/demo,

  *

    Topics: a list (no longer than half a page) describing the covered
    topics of interest,

  *

    Motivation(one to three paragraphs): why is the topic timely and of
    particular interest to the AIME participants?

  *

    Former workshops, tutorials or demos(if applicable): describe the
    development of the workshop series over the past 3-5 years. Provide
    quantitative information on submissions and attendance,

  *

    Format(a tabular schedule or a one paragraph summary): the intended
    mix of events, such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels,
    demos, and general discussion,

  *

    Intended length: half-day or full day?

  *

    Audience: who and how many people are likely to attend?

  *

    Program Committee: name and affiliations of potential PC members

  *

    Requirements: audio-visual or technical requirements and special
    room requirements (e.g., a computer lab).

We strongly advise to provide more than one chair, preferably 
originating from different institutions, for adding different 
perspectives to the topics of the event. We will favor workshops 
presenting an innovative structure and a diverse program that attracts 
various types of contributions and ensures rich interactions.

Organizers of accepted events will be required to prepare a website 
containing their call of papers and contributions, and detailed 
information about the event organization and timelines. A link to this 
website will be provided at the AIME 2019 conference website. While the 
local chair (Szymon Wilk, szymon.wilk@cs.put.poznan.pl 
<mailto:szymon.wilk@cs.put.poznan.pl>) will assist with the local 
organization of the event, the corresponding organizers will be 
responsible for conducting their own reviewing process, for promoting 
their event, and for preparing proceedings in electronic format (PDF). 
At least one chair of an accepted event will have to attend the event in 
person.

The chairs of each accepted event will receive one free registration 
(conference + one workshop/tutorial day) per event. Event attendees must 
register and pay up for the AIME 2019 conference and the event 
registration.

  Call for Doctoral Consortium Papers

The 8th Doctoral Consortium in conjunction with the AIME 2019 conference 
will provide an opportunity for PhD students to present their research 
plans or their preliminary work in an informal and supportive 
atmosphere. The PhD students will be able to discuss their plans, 
preliminary results (optional), and the specific problems they are 
encountering. They will get feedback and advice from the Academic Panel 
including a number of prominent academic researchers with substantial 
experience in the field who will actively give constructive feedback and 
advice and contribute to the discussions.

The Doctoral Consortium will host the presentations by about 6 PhD 
students who will be selected by the Doctoral Consortium chair.


    Submission

Unlike other conference submissions, a Doctoral Consortium submission 
pertains specifically to the PhD thesis as a whole or part thereof 
(thereafter both will be termed the research work). Submissions should 
describe (in 2000-2500 words, approx. 4-5 pages) a research plan on a 
topic related to AI in medicine and include the following elements:

  *

    Title and author,

  *

    The problem, with an argument of why it is important,

  *

    The goal and the research questions,

  *

    The planned approach and methods for solving the problem

  *

    An outline of what is already known about the research problem

  *

    The expected results from the research work like overviews,
    algorithms, better understanding of a concept, a pilot, model or system,

  *

    Any questions you might have or problems you encounter for which you
    specifically would like feedback on such as:

      o

        Do I need to write a systematic review before I start?

      o

        How should I proceed?

      o

        Where should I consider publishing?

      o

        How should I evaluate my work?

      o

        Which courses would suit me best to carry out the work?

      o

        Is it normal to meet my supervisor once a week/month/year?


Submissions be formatted according to the Springer’s LNCS format (see 
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html) and send by e-mail in PDF 
format to Annette ten Teije (annette@cs.vu.nl)

Consortium submission. (Note: Each submission will be confirmed by a 
return message. If a confirmation message has not been received within 5 
days after submission, please contact Annette ten Teije

Submissions will be reviewed by members of the Academic Panel and by 
submitting students (each student will be asked to review one submission 
prepared by another person). Based on reviews, the Doctoral Consortium 
chair will select about 6 submissions to be presented and discussed 
during the meeting. The selection will be based on the relevancy to AI 
in medicine topics (see for example the scope for AIME 2019), relevancy 
to the doctoral consortium (there is for example no point to present 
finished work at the meeting), the clarity of writing, and the resulting 
spectrum of presented topics. Selected submissions will appear in 
workshop notes that will be distributed among conference participants.

    Participation

Participation in the meeting is open to anyone who wishes to attend and 
not just to the presenting PhD students. Details on payment and 
registration will be announced on the AIME 2019 website.
