Hello everyone! My name is Cartik Saravanamuthu. Because my full name is even longer (!), I am also known as Cartik Kothari. I write this introduction at Scott Marshall's request from a teleconference earlier today. Some of you on this list may know me from before. At present, I am a postdoc working in cancer genomics at the Ohio State University. My current research work involves integrating legacy karyotype data, SNP data, CGH data, NexGen sequence data, as well as EHR data from patients with leukemia and prostrate cancer for the purpose of finding correlations between gene expression and disease phenotypes as well as for predictive analysis. In addition to OSU's own Data Warehouse and Integrated Health Information Systems, I leverage plenty of open source knowledge bases in my work including TCGA, NCI Metathesaurus, and NCI datasets such as Mitelman. My doctoral thesis work was in knowledge representation formalisms for the Semantic Web, specifically analyzing the capabilities of OWL (Version 1) towards capturing the semantics of binary relations. I have a very good foundation in Description Logics and authored one of the earliest OWL ontologies, the OntoSensor, around 2004 for sensor data fusion for surveillance and security applications. Since then, I have worked primarily in data integration and knowledge discovery architectures in very diverse areas such as evolutionary biology and homeland security. I am very interested in the dataset description initiative at the HCLS WG. >From an application perspective, I think this metadata standard will be very useful in my current research work. I hope to contribute to this initiative from an application development context. Thank you
