Principal Investigator: Jyotishman Pathak, Associate Professor of Medical Informatics

Background: Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayo.edu) is a world-class health care organization with cutting-edge genetic research programs. The Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics (BSI) employs more than 280 experts in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and clinical informatics. Our scientists work collaboratively with basic and clinical researchers, providing analytical and interpretative expertise to enable or validate discoveries with high impact on patient care. BSI also leads in the development of statistical and informatics methodologies to provide novel approaches to analyze biomedical data.

The Mayo Clinic Center for the Science of Healthcare Delivery (http://mayoresearch.mayo.edu/mayo/research/science-of-health-care-delivery) has created an infrastructure to support health services research that translates into a way of delivering health care to patients that add value. The Clinical Informatics Program (CLIP) seeks to support the transformation of health care delivery through a standardized approach to cohort identification, phenotype definition, development of clinical registries and enhancing the data mining techniques and methodology. The program has a 3 year operational plan to leverage existing resources and expertise to achieve a robust platform for clinical informatics that is also agnostic to electronic health record software applications.

Responsibilities: The Clinical Informatics Program (CLIP) is looking for a Post-doctoral Research Associate who can commit two to three years to help support the goals and objectives of the CLIP. The Research Associate will be responsible for developing novel methodologies and applications to facilitate phenotype extraction, data standardization and management using electronic health records across the Mayo Clinic enterprise (Arizona, Florida, Rochester and Health System), and to facilitate the translation of research discoveries into clinical practice.

Requirements: Minimum qualifications include a M.D. and/or Ph.D. in informatics, computer science or a closely related field. Curriculum and experience with standardized terminologies, metadata, electronic health records and related technologies as well as experience in programming and software development will be necessary for this opportunity. The candidate interested in this position must be highly motivated, willing to learn and demonstrate initiative in assigned tasks. Strong oral and written communication skills are crucial.

Preferences: Preferred requirements for this position include a curriculum in and/or experience with electronic health records, healthcare data standards, data mining, machine learning and natural language processing. Experience with Java, Python, PHP, and/or Perl is desirable, as is knowledge of terminology/ontology development tools and environment. Knowledge or experience in clinical data modeling and phenotype extraction from electronic health records will be an added advantage.

Terms: The position is available immediately and can be renewed annually.

Salary & benefits: Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit organization that integrates research with clinical practices and education in a multi-campus environment. Mayo Clinic offers an attractive benefit package. For salary information (starting salary and salary range), contact the Research Temporary Professional Personnel Office at researchtp@mayo.edu or call 507-266-1362.
