ABSTRACT:
HL7 (Health Level 7) is a highly influential collection of standards for
healthcare-specific data exchange between computer applications, and HL7’s
Clinical Document Architecture forms part of the government’s criteria for
Meaningful Use of electronic health record technology. We provide a brief
outline of the current version of HL7 and its ‘Reference Information
Model’, focusing specifically on ontologically-related features and
pointing to a number of areas of concern.

SPEAKER BIO:
Barry Smith is a prominent contributor to both theoretical and applied
research in the field of biomedical ontology and the editor of the HL7
Watch blog. He leads the dissemination efforts of the National Center for
Biomedical Ontology, and is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed
publications on ontology and its applications.
