Re: A new potential HCLS use case (scientific discourse)

Hi Charlie,

Yes, I agree. It was partly a naming problem (which should get corrected in the way you propose) and partly a utility problem. I'd like to see us focus down on the specifics that are imposed by the use case template i provided. So, yes, it makes sense and yes I think the template I provided should replace the current template in name, but the current template should not go away, just shifted in the process to preceded the one I provided. And in fact, the process usually starts with a description as it currently exists and then we go through the process of narrowing it down to *one of* the many that are implicit in the business case. That was actually my intent -- to narrow our focus so we can be specific and proceed efficiently. Thanks for articulating it.

Thanks Joanne. I certainly agree that the Use Case Template that you have linked to is very useful and, in fact, looks very similar to ones that I have used in the past in the context of specific software development projects. I think that the current HCLS UC Template is aimed more at being a higher-level “scope and boundary of proposed activity” template than a formal “use case for software development” template. As such, perhaps the name “Use Case Template” is not quite correct and maybe “Business Use Case” or “Business Scope Definition” might be better. In the end, I think that both templates are useful since a single instance of the current HCLS template would naturally give rise to multiple instances of your template, all of which would flesh out component various operational threads of the upper-level use case/business scope defined in the current HCLS template.

Does this make sense to you, or do you think your suggested template could/should replace the current HCLS template?

Hi Michel, Richard, Esteemed Colleagues,

I'd like to propose that we use (add) this use case template that we have found useful at RPI:

There are some examples at: http://tw.rpi.edu/web/Courses/SemanticeScience/2011 See the reading assigned in Class 3 and examples assigned, in preparation for Class 4: Use Case Development

Dear all,

Further to the first agenda point, use cases, for our call in 42 minutes, I'd like to review:

a) The new HCLS Use Case template which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DRnwXw7xIOLTjZ4TUiDtT80ouSQYfUqM9KWKXVgr60s/edit?hl=en_US

b) Our current three use cases: http://www.w3.org/wiki/HCLSIG/SWANSIOC/Actions/RhetoricalStructure#Use_Cases

and ask ourselves and each other:

1) Are these use cases still valid, or have they been addressed by our work so far?
2) If they are valid, how can we get them to be compliant with the new format: can someone take on each use cases?
3) If there's time: brainstorm about other use cases, or otherwise make a plan to gather more use cases before the next meeting.

Talk in a bit! Best,

- Anita.

Colleagues:

This is a reminder for the biweekly HCLS Scientific Discourse concall scheduled for Monday, 26 Sept 10am-11am EDT / 14:00-15:00 UTC.

As discussed in the previous call, we'll be focusing on defined tasks and use cases for the coming year.

- we will begin a review and update of our use cases

- ISA-RDF will be discussed as a potential shared task for 2011-12 (see underlying ISA-TAB project here: http://isa-tools.org/ for some background)
