Hello All! The National Center for Biomedical Ontology is pleased to announce its next online Seminar Series on Wednesday, February 4th at 10am PST. This series aims to showcase new projects, technologies and ideas in biomedical ontology by featuring the work of a different collaborator each session. It is a webinar held online, and as such is open to anyone interested, regardless of location or affiliation. Below is Information on how to join next weekıs online meeting and accompanying teleconference. The seminar, Infectious Disease Ontology, will be presented by Lindsay Cowell, Duke University, with Introduction by Barry Smith. Please see the abstract for this presentation below. For a schedule of 2009 presentations through June, or for more information about the series, please visit the Seminar Series home page: http://www.bioontology.org/seminar_series.html. Information on how to join this weekıs webinar is given below. To receive information on or to join any future meetings, please contact me at skanel@stanford.edu. The sponsoring organization, the National Center for Biomedical Ontology (http://www.bioontology.org), is a consortium of leading biologists, clinicians, informaticians, and ontologists who develop innovative technology and methods allowing scientists to create, disseminate, and manage biomedical information and knowledge in machine-processable form. We hope to see you there. TITLE: Infectious Disease Ontology ABSTRACT: The Infectious Disease Ontology (IDO) was initiated as part of the OBO Foundry with funding from the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund and from the NIAID. Its goal is to provide a common template for the creation of ontologies for families of diseases, pathogens, and vectors. The benefits of this template approach are that it allows for each of the ontologies to be developed by experts in the domain of a particular ontology while ensuring that the resulting ontologies and the data annotated in their terms are interoperable. In addition, providing a template reduces errors and allows the ontology developers to progress rapidly by reducing the false starts common to early stage ontology development. IDO will be tested using data from Staphylococcus aureus (S.a.) infection, one of the most common and potentially deadly human infections, with the goal of predicting disease genes and drawing consequences for developing new sorts of patient-centered diagnosis and treatment. Other diseases being studied by the members of the IDO Consortium include malaria and other vector-borne diseases, tuberculosis, infective endocarditis, influenza and dengue fever. Dr. Cowell will outline the structure and goals of the IDO project, and the work of the IDO consortium. Further information on the initiative is available at http://infectiousdiseaseontology.org/.
