REMINDER: NCBO Seminar Series - Meeting Info for Wed, April 15!

Hello All!

The National Center for Biomedical Ontology is pleased to announce its next
online Seminar Series, TOMORROW, April 15th at 10am PST. The seminar will be
presented by NCBO collaborator Jim Brinkley, University of Washington. The
title of the presentation will be ³Ontology Views, An Update².

A special seminar has been scheduled to redo Mark Wilkinsonıs presentation
on June 10th, 11am. Please put it in your calendar.

This series aims to showcase new projects, technologies and ideas in
biomedical ontology by featuring the work of a different collaborator each
session. It is a webinar held online, and as such is open to anyone
interested, regardless of location or affiliation.

Below is Information on how to join next weekıs online meeting and
accompanying teleconference. Please note there will not be a VOIP option,
and attendees must call into the teleconference.

For a schedule of 2009 presentations through June, or for more information
about the series, please visit the Seminar Series home page:
http://www.bioontology.org/seminar_series.html. Information on how to join
this weekıs webinar is given below. To receive information on or to join any
future meetings, please contact me at skanel@stanford.edu.

The sponsoring organization, the National Center for Biomedical Ontology
(http://www.bioontology.org), is a consortium of leading biologists,
clinicians, informaticians, and ontologists who develop innovative
technology and methods allowing scientists to create, disseminate, and
manage biomedical information and knowledge in machine-processable form.

We hope to see you there.

Title: Ontology Views, An Update
Abstract: The purpose of our collaborative RO1 is to develop methods for
deriving application ontologies from one or more reference ontologies so
that they become practical for use in real-world applications. Our general
approach is based on the database notion of a ³view², where for an ontology
the view is defined by a query over the underlying reference ontology(s), in
this case using extensions that we designed for the SparQL semantic web
query language. In this talk I will describe some of our progress since my
last presentation to this group in May 2008, including 1) vSparQL, an
implemented extension to SparQL that permits regular path expressions,
sub-queries and recursive queries, 2) a demonstration of the expressiveness
of vSparQL in deriving a complex neuroanatomy view from the Foundational
Model of Anatomy, 3) creation of a view from two source ontologies, 4)
incorporation of materialized views into Bioportal, 5) use of views in two
driving use cases: RadLex, and biosimulation model integration, and 6)
ongoing and planned work in additional use cases, intermediate languages,
graphical view generation, and a portal for generating and saving vSparQL
queries.
