[apologies for multiple postings] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers --------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Submissions to the journal Applied Ontology MetaOntology Issue: Biomedical Ontologies (complete CFP in PDF form available at: http://tinyurl.com/veb4k) journal: http://www.applied-ontology.org/ contact: metaontology@iospress.nl --------------------------------------------------------------------- Deadline: January 1, 2007. Applied Ontology plans to devote one issue each year to publishing information on ontological resources (ontologies and ontology-related tools) of interest to different professional communities. The MetaOntology Issue has two components. 1) The print issue The print issue contains brief descriptions of high-quality, publicly available ontological resources, focusing on content, formalism, applications, and access mechanisms. These descriptions are available in both print and online versions. Because of space limitations, the systems presented in the print issue are selected for significance and novelty. 2) The MetaOntology The MetaOntology itself is an evolving ontology of ontologies and of ontology-related tools that will be available on the journal's Web site. As opposed to the print issue, the MetaOntology will feature a larger number of systems. It will serve as a pointer to high-quality, publicly available resources developed for specialized domains, as well as to upper-level ontologies and general reference ontologies. Ontology-related tools, such as ontology management systems and reasoners, also will be integrated in the MetaOntology. Not only will the MetaOntology provide a brief summary and contact information for each system, but also it will classify the systems according to their properties. It will function as a registry where ontology developers can provide information about their systems and where ontology users can learn about existing systems. The first Applied Ontology MetaOntology Issue will be devoted to the theme of ontologies in biomedicine. All ontologies related to the life sciences, clinical medicine, health care, and related fields will be considered for publication. The issue will be edited by Olivier Bodenreider, M.D., Ph.D., of the United States National Library of Medicine. The deadline for submission to this special issue of the journal is January 1, 2007. Submission to the MetaOntology Issue does not guarantee that the submission will appear in the print version of the MetaOntology Issue or even will be included in the MetaOntology. All submissions will be subject to editorial review. --------------------------------------------------------------------- * Instructions for submission to the MetaOntology Issue (print) Authors should submit their manuscript electronically through the same mechanism used for regular submissions to the journal. The template of information to be filled for submission to the MetaOntology issue is available as part of the complete CFP in PDF form at: http://tinyurl.com/veb4k In addition to filling out the template, authors should produce a brief description of their resource (ontology or related tool). This description should concentrate on the factual content of the ontology or on the basic functions of the tool. The description must also provide sufficient information so that the reader can easily access the resource. Submissions to the MetaOntology Issue are expected to be 4 to 5 printed journal pages in length, but exceptions may be considered. Additional content (e.g., screen shots, a list of top-level classes, code snippets) may be made available as supplementary material available online on the MetaOntology Web site. All supplementary material is subject to editorial review before publication. Authors should refer to the Applied Ontology "author guidelines" for instructions regarding preparation of manuscripts. See: http://www.iospress.nl/html/15705838_ita.html Authors are encouraged to supply the names, affiliations, and email addresses of four suggested referees. Referees should be scientists working independently (i.e., not a recent collaborator) in areas similar to that of the author who have relevant expertise. Authors whose submissions are accepted for publication will receive additional information on submitting an entry to the MetaOntology. Due to page restrictions, not all accepted submissions can be included in the MetaOntology Issue as individual articles. Accordingly to the Journal's policy, descriptions of tools will be published only where a contribution to the practice of ontological analysis and conceptual modeling is clearly established. If a manuscript is not accepted for publication, but the resource described is deemed appropriate for inclusion in the MetaOntology, authors will receive additional information on how to submit their entry to that collection. --------------------------------------------------------------------- For further information, please contact the editor of the MetaOntology Issue at metaontology@iospress.nl. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
