Given that SWRL is not a W3C Recommendation, it may be a better idea

to use "Rules" in general without reference to any standard, etc.

 

There was also a discussion on someone liasing with the RIF Group

on these aspects. Who it is remains to be seen.

Vipul, I've been looking this over, there's parts I agree with completely, and
parts I agree in spirit, although I would quibble with words if the specific
wording becomes really important.  There is one thing, though, which I think is
an error and I must mention - you write

 

"Various candidate possibilities of representing information and knowledge in an
ontology are based on available standards such as RDF, OWL and SWRL."

 

RDF, RDF Schema, and OWL are indeed standards.  SWRL is not.  It is a Note
submitted by members, and thus it has a VERY different status than the others
(and, in fact, the newly formed Rule Interchange Format Working Group was
chartered to create a new Recommendation in this space).

 

If the group really wants rules in the ontologies developed (I'd suspect we
could go a long way without them), I have no objection to choosing SWRL, but we
would have to make it clear to the public that this is not a standard, may not
be the choice of an ongoing working group, and therefore must be used at
participants own risk.  (This would be true of any rule system proposed)
