Dear all, Recent work on the GeoSPARQL update (version 1.1 is coming!) triggered a discussion on the need for a web ontology to describe Coordinate Reference Systems. This discussion is out of scope for the GeoSPARQL SWG over at OGC for now, so we will have it during an online GeoSemantics DWG session on the 2nd of February. This session is open also to non-OGC members. Since there might be interest in this topic also within SDWWG, I'm forwarding the announcement to this group. The discussion will focus on these questions: - Is the need for a CRS ontology evident? Participants are invited to present their arguments for needing a CRS ontology. - Where should this work be done, and who should be its custodian? The GeoSemantics DWG? Should the SDWWG be involved? The CRS DWG? An important related question is also: does this need to be a normative standard? If it does, a new or existing SWG would need to take up this work. - What existing work is there? E.g. ISO 19111, derived ISO ontology, IGN CRS ontology... This existing work should be taken as input. ISO 19111 aka OGC AS Topic 2 is taken as the undisputed conceptual model that this CRS ontology would implement. However, noting that the ISO ontologies, including the ontology implementing ISO 19111, are automatically produced from their standard's UML, they are not recommended for use. This can also be a topic of the session's discussion. If you're an OGC member, you can find the meeting joining details in the OGC Portal. If not, let me know and I will forward you the joining details. Linda
