Another approach to specifying inexact dates is available through the Library of Congress's Extended Date/Time Format ED/TF, which handles cases not accommodated by ISO 8601-2004. (See https://www.loc.gov/standards/datetime/ ) The functionality of ED/TF is being incorporated into a revision of ISO 8601 that's currently under ratification. (See https://www.loc.gov/standards/datetime/ISO_DIS%208601-2.pdf) After ratification, expect schema.org will allow more fuzzy dates, such as when the beginning or end date is not know for certain.
