OK. Problem there is that sometimes the initial is the first name - T. 
Coraghessan Boyle. And of course there can be any number of "middle" 
names or initials (J. R. R. Tolkien). The more you think about it, the 
more the library practice of family name/forename(s) becomes the 
sensible approach.

If we have a ToC then we need at least some way of ordering those repeated elements. (Or force ourselves to provide it as a single string.) I do think that ToC and description are different things, and you do see them treated differently in, for instance, Google Books and in Amazon.
