Re: [Edison-wp2] Format for exchanging data about data science courses and programs

Dear Tomasz,

I would recommend to have the “EDISON Discussion Document” in a form which
is it easy to comment and contribute collaboratively i.e. google doc

Very happy to read your review and comparison of existing standards
describing course information. I found your table useful. Still I think you
are discarding schema.org too early and there are many benefits you are not
considering. Happy to talk about this next week Friday.

Most of the missing properties you highlighted are being considered for the
new course schema.org type. The Course schema community group
<https://www.w3.org/community/schema-course-extend/> is doing a great job
defining the scope and providing good examples and use cases
<https://www.w3.org/community/schema-course-extend/wiki/Main_Page>. You
might want to have a look to the properties considered in early proposals [1
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/12YWjLzZC8FiTiOwSAETRIEozeqZdn6O8a4fgqK4t5Ss/edit?usp=sharing>
,2 <http://course.schema-course-extend-rjwprop.appspot.com/Course>].

In BioSchemas we have similar goals and went through a similar process
focusing on life science related information (events, courses, training
materials, ...). We decided to rely on the schema.org data model which is
based on community agreements and it is supported by the main search
engines.

We also found missing properties we think are useful. We will justify why
these properties are important and we will try to bring them forward into
existing schema.org types. Even if these new properties are not yet
approved by schema.org we can and we are using them.

For us the data model it is one component of the standard. For us it is
also important to identify properties that would require a controlled
vocabulary and properties which we think are key for the description of one
type. This is not the objective of schema.org so for this purpose we
created life sciences specifications on top of schema.org types which
includes this information as well as examples. ie. events
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=12O8gsOuH2qHKpis6vTHxXExraNH5XZEnoilwNgWWgaQ>,
training materials
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HG2fEjCoDUE4tn1XZ_ZIeWLEFXnI3YtS_FRIIFIbv-s/edit>,
....

We made few preliminary analysis of how our organisations currently expose
this information. ie. training materials
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cQ6mDbsG_cMX2EDAN8xH6-9yMRba8-rErlPeP8HTs8A/edit>,
events
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RE2JBaFz_i1uo_nRA7swDBNZG5BodmcbXo5V_jScsTo/edit#gid=0>,
.... This helped us to get some of the feedback you are looking for. You
would think to do the same analysis across EDISON course providers.

For data exchange purposes schema.org can be nicely presented in JSON-LD
and I am confident it should not be a problem to transform it into
iCalendar if this is the format you want to support for integration.

Talk to you next Friday.

Regards,
Rafael
