No, Ubuntu One is not Open Sorce / Free Software as a solution.
Ubuntu One is, according to <https://launchpad.net/ubuntuone-servers>,
proprietary licensed without access to source code.
_client_ code exist for interaction with Ubuntu One, which is
GPL-licensed and therefore Open Source according to OSI as well as Free
Software according to "Debian Free Software Guidelines".
Open/Free clients exists also for Facebook, Twitter and DropBox.
<https://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox/LeavingTheCloud> lists these Free
alternatives to DropBox with GUI clients for multiple platforms:
SparkleShare: <http://sparkleshare.org/>
iFolder: <http://www.ifolder.com/ifolder>
git-annex: <http://git-annex.branchable.com/>
SparkleShare and git-annex uses git (not sure about iFolder).
SparkeShare and iFolder have been around for quite some time, written in
C#. git-annex is younger, written in Haskell.
I would recommend to take a good look at git-annex.
