Hi Jason,

Thanks for checking in on this, while we get the permissions issue sorted.

I did rework the abstract slightly. I found the initial draft to focus too much on problems and not possibility IMO. I also added a section that you will see soon where we can discuss some of the existential aspects of AI / ML in the context of supporting the needs of people with disabilities successfully.

Recent advances in machine learning and generative artificial intelligence (AI) have expanded the range of possibility and problems for which effective computational solutions are feasible. Examples of such challenges include improving the accuracy of speech recognition, image recognition, performing programming tasks, question answering, and natural language interaction. Machine learing technology also has unique and significant limitations. This document examines the consequences of these developments for the accessibility of the Web to people with disabilities including, authors who want to create accessible content, to accessibility evaluators and testers. In doing so, it both addresses the potential benefits and clarifies issues that should be considered in the further evolution of Web standards and applications for users and accessibility practitioners alike.

Fundamental concepts of machine learning and generative AI are first introduced. The discussion then centers on a series of cases illustrative of accessibility-related applications that are being transformed by this technology.

Josh, if you wish any of your proposed changes to the abstract to be considered for the first public working draft, we’ll need those suggestions quite soon (preferably by tomorrow).

The decision whether to proceed to request that APA publish the current text as a First Public Working Draft takes place at Wednesday’s meeting, which is why we’ll need all changes to have been made by then.

Josh's larger changes aren’t first public working draft material, thus we can consider them in parallel with the public review process - assuming, of course, that APA decides to go ahead with publication.

I’ve reviewed the AI doc and (finally) made some suggested edits to it with a modified structure that I hope will give us the scope to expand on the many interesting ideas we have been sharing.

I’ve also reviewed the new draft abstract Jason, thank you for that, and made some suggested edits. However, I cannot seem to push my branch to the W3C GH. I’ve cc’ed Roy on this mail and maybe he can help. I don’t seem to have permissions, when I do I will push my local branch with the new suggested edits/structure.

I merged the proposed abstract into the main branch, after making clarifications.

Comments are, as always, most welcome. We should strive to agree on this text in advance of next week’s meeting. If you plan to suggest changes that should be made before we decide whether to invite APA to consider the draft for publication, please try to do so before the end of Monday next week.
