RE: Definition of Mixed Reality

The paper which seems to be most frequently cited as developing the distinctions between mixed reality, augmented reality and virtual reality is as follows. I think it's worth reading by those of us who have access to the journal, and we can summarize it for those who don't.

Milgram, P., Takemura, H., Utsumi, A., & Kishino, F. (1995, December). Augmented reality: A class of displays on the reality-virtuality continuum. In Telemanipulator and telepresence technologies (Vol. 2351, pp. 282-293).

Subject: Definition of Mixed Reality

Just a quick e-mail following up on our discussion regarding the definition of mixed reality. I've done a fair bit of searching and the best resource I can find regarding what it is and its implications is a Microsoft one at:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/mixed-reality<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fwindows%2Fmixed-reality%2Fmixed-reality&data=02%7C01%7Cjjwhite%40ets.org%7C687aa7566d23406bc7cd08d5dd60f023%7C0ba6e9b760b34fae92f37e6ddd9e9b65%7C0%7C0%7C636658330786575583&sdata=oG%2B4RvaHD4j48UDGt4UX1Y1Hy1%2FKYuEe96X990jQ1jc%3D&reserved=0>

This page goes into a fair bit of detail and starts as:

"Mixed reality is the result of blending the physical world with the digital world. Mixed reality is the next evolution in human, computer, and environment interaction and unlocks possibilities that before now were restricted to our imaginations. It is made possible by advancements in computer vision, graphical processing power, display technology, and input systems. The term mixed reality was originally introduced in a 1994 paper by Paul Milgram and Fumio Kishino, "A Taxonomy of Mixed Reality Visual Displays<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fetclab.mie.utoronto.ca%2Fpeople%2Fpaul_dir%2FIEICE94%2Fieice.html&data=02%7C01%7Cjjwhite%40ets.org%7C687aa7566d23406bc7cd08d5dd60f023%7C0ba6e9b760b34fae92f37e6ddd9e9b65%7C0%7C0%7C636658330786585595&sdata=wJit3IqoYdfWrB%2Bri9GNMAOTjl9tmOn5FUTrCJWliQU%3D&reserved=0>." Their paper introduced the concept of the virtuality continuum and focused on how the categorization of taxonomy applied to displays. Since then, the application of mixed reality goes beyond displays but also includes environmental input, spatial sound, and location."

While the article is aligned understandably to Microsoft's technologies and developments so it needs to be read in that context, it does provide a good insight into the evolution of the term and its current relevance.

Scott.
