Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA) 1.1

http://www.w3.org/TR/2016/WD-wai-aria-1.1-20160721/

Abstract

Accessibility of web content requires semantic information about widgets, structures, and behaviors, in order to allow assistive technologies to convey appropriate information to persons with disabilities. This specification provides an ontology of roles, states, and properties that define accessible user interface elements and can be used to improve the accessibility and interoperability of web content and applications. These semantics are designed to allow an author to properly convey user interface behaviors and structural information to assistive technologies in document-level markup. This version adds features new since WAI-ARIA 1.0 [WAI-ARIA-10] to improve interoperability with assistive technologies to form a more consistent accessibility model for [HTML5] and [SVG2]. This specification complements both [HTML5] and [SVG2].

Status of the Document

This section describes the status of this document at the time of its publication. Other documents may supersede this document. A list of current W3C publications and the latest revision of this technical report can be found in the W3C technical reports index at http://www.w3.org/TR/.

This is a Working Draft of WAI-ARIA 1.1 by the Accessible Rich Internet Applications Working Group of the Web Accessibility Initiative. The Working Group intends for this to be the last Working Draft before it advances to Candidate Recommendation (CR). This version is being published for wide review to collect input on the Working Group's determination that the specification is feature-complete, so focus can shift to implementation and testing for the CR publication. If no major changes are made as a result of comments on this draft, ARIA 1.1 will advance to CR.

This version of ARIA 1.1 changes the aria-kbdshortcuts property to aria-keyshortcuts, expands roles that can be used in combo boxes, adds a requirement that host languages must not prevent aria label mechanisms from being used. The Working Group explored creating a role for passwords but did not include it, and removed the text role; it intends to return to these roles in a later version of ARIA. This publication also includes various structural tweaks. This draft is supported by Core Accessibility API Mappings 1.1 [CORE-AAM] and Accessible Name and Description: Computation and Accessibility API Mappings [ACCNAME-AAM], as well as various technology-specific Accessibility API Mappings. A history of changes to WAI-ARIA 1.1 is available in the appendix.

Feedback on any aspect of the specification is accepted. To comment, send email to public-aria@w3.org (comment archive) or file an issue in the W3C ARIA GitHub repository. Comments are requested by 26 August 2016. In-progress updates to the document may be viewed in the publicly visible editors' draft.
