Hello. My name is Chimezie (chee-meh-zee-eh) Ogbuji and I'm the Lead Systems Analyst in the Cleveland Clinic Foundation's Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery research department. My role in this department is technological oversight, software architecture, design and deployment of an ongoing (4 years and counting) project to replace a very dated but valuable Cardiovascular Information Registry (CVIR [1]) implemented originally as a relational database. In particular the project aims to completely supplant the existing system with a framework and a set of methodologies for automating the modeling, management, data entry, and day-to-day operations of a Content Management System (CMS) built around XML and RDF persistence for data interchange, and analysis. This system is called SemanticDB. The long term goal is a research platform that can be deployed to address any conceivable domain of medicine with minimal cost to setup, maintain, and extend into unintended areas. We hope (through participation in this WG) to learn about how to best leverage SPARQL as the primary querying mechanism for our clinical research CMS. In particular we hope to determine if indeed SPARQL can facilitate a Semantic Web approach to the age-old problem of Computer-based Patient Records as defined by the Institute of Medicine [2]. We have faced some challenges in this regard and hope our involvement in this WG will help determine if this is indeed the proper direction. We also hope to contribute the various representation (and querying) lessons we have learned during this project to this Working Group.
