W3C [PBG] Agenda for Americas/Europe Call on Tuesday, 4/27

Hello Publishing Business Group members,

Please find below the agenda for our Americas/Europe call this week, Tuesday, April 27th, 2021, to be held at [0] via the Zoom link in the meeting invite.

We are hoping you will be able to join us in at least one of our meetings over the next several weeks as we work to help build out the business requirements, use cases and reading system expectations for an ecosystem that will support EPUB that allows for a combination of Fixed Layout and Reflowable pages. We will also be addressing other fixed layout discussions during these sessions as well, so if there are adjacent topics, please raise them.

  Agenda

  *   Discussion: Fixed + Reflow
     * Imagine a beautiful world, where you might have a page that is fixed and the next one flowing so that you can take advantage of the best of both worlds in digital reading and have a spread where one page could be reformed so the font was bigger or smaller and the other one have an image that extends to the bleed on all edges…

     * Are there publication types that need this that haven’t been made into digital because of missing functionality?
     * What categories and use cases would most benefit from this combination?
     * Do you have authors and brands who would be significantly happier with digital products if this kind of experience could be supported?
     * How would you expect an RS to render content that went from a fixed aspect ratio to a flowing one?
     * How would you expect an RS to handle things like changing fontsizes or fonts?
     * Would you consider applying this to only frontlist or to backlist as well?

  * Discussion: CBZ Files – Where and how are they used in the global comics markets?
     * Are many people distributing these?
     * Are they used in addition to EPUB or instead?
     * Are more partners considering taking them?

  *   Discussion: Fixed + Popups
     * Some reading systems support javascript popups (or gracefully fail) that allows for Children’s Picturebooks to have text enlarged to make it easier to read
     * Are there other use cases besides graphic novels where Fixed + Popups would allow for better readability?
     * What are the accessibility implications of having the text twice in the file?

  * Discussion: Sample files for testing
     * There is a need for more testing material, specifically for FXL testing for the EPUB3 WG—what is needed and how can we help with this?

  *   Discussion: Piracy of content
     * We heard at our Conference Day Session last month that piracy is expanding in Japan. Is this a concern elsewhere?

  * Reminder: Collecting issues and use cases
