Publishing Business Group participants, In the minutes of yesterday's BG meeting Daihei is noted as having said there are issues with Japanese typography beyond just FXL [1]. The W3C Internationalization Working Group [2] published a set of documents [3] last week that go into considerable detail to analyse gaps in the Web support for some specific languages. The Japanese Gap Analysis document may help to detail some of what Daihei was noting: Japanese Gap Analysis W3C First Public Working Draft 16 June 2020 https://www.w3.org/TR/2020/WD-jpan-gap-20200616 "Abstract "This document describes and prioritises gaps for the support of Japanese on the Web and in eBooks. In particular, it is concerned with text layout. It checks that needed features are supported in W3C specifications, in particular HTML and CSS and those relating to digital publications. It also checks whether the features have been implemented in browsers and ereaders. This is a preliminary analysis." These gap analyses are written with the help of local language experts to advise all W3C Working Groups and developers on the remaining challenges to improve the web support for all written languages.
