RE: Minutes from EPUB.Next

Hello. Here are some initial thoughts about EPUB.Next:

  1. HTML metadata (uses of <link> and <meta> elements) could enable users to toggle browser-provided “EPUB style” display of content, e.g., with browser-provided collapsible side panels providing navigation based on sites’ structures.

     * Document metadata could include referencing a table of contents resource.
     * Document metadata could include referencing a site outline resource.
     * Document metadata could include referencing a spine resource.

  1. Websites could be saved to EPUB’s for offline viewing.

     * Metadata (see above) could come into play when storing websites as EPUB’s for offline viewing.

  1. EDUPUB 4

     * What are the requirements for a JavaScript API for digital textbooks?

                                                               i. See also: http://idpf.org/edupub , http://idpf.org/epub/sc/api/ .

ii. A JavaScript API could facilitate interoperability between digital textbooks and LMS’s and e-learning systems.

           * Users could use their browsers or textbook reader software to configure interoperation with LMS’s and e-learning systems. Ideally, this would be simple for users to do. Digital textbooks would, then, be interoperable with all such systems, needing only to utilize the JavaScript API.
