Fellow webpubbers, I would like to start drafting a skeleton specification for Personalization of Web Publications within the next 2-3 weeks. Before setting up issues on GitHub, where we can delve into technical specifics and discussions, let's stake out definitions and requirements for personalization as it relates to a web publication. There is already quite a bit of work on personalization, primarily regarding accessibility, and part of our role is to identify intersections between our requirements and the existing work. We are not reinventing the wheel, but we must be mindful that the context for publications and dedicated reading devices might imply unique requirements. I welcome any of you who are interested in this work to join this task force by replying to this email and/or suggesting a time, via Doodle, for our first call. Doodle poll: https://doodle.com/poll/tt2w9ad8gigxw3zh Early thoughts for this task force to consider (not all of these will be discussed at our first call) * Define what we mean by "personalization" and what use cases we need to consider. * User's customization of the user agent and publication * For accessibility needs * For personal preferences * For privacy reasons * Other? * Author/publisher's customization of the publication and prescriptions to the user agent * Layout and rendering options – UI overrides, etc. * Responsiveness * Dictionaries/languages * Other? * Other avenues for personalization * Restrictions to personalization * Where does our work overlap with task forces for accessibility, manifest, metadata, navigation, and, potentially, privacy? * Ultimately, where do we draw the line between what comprises a personalized layer (from a user experience point of view) and what falls under pure content authoring? * Identify other groups at the W3C with whom we should coordinate, and assign people for scouting and outreach. Please suggest items for consideration and I will compose an agenda for our call. Thank you, Mateus --- Mateus Manço Teixeira Co-Director, The Norton Lab Manager, Ebook Production W. W.
