Summary of 12 December 2019 joint PING / Web Payment Security IG teleconference

Dear PING,

The following is summary of the discussion between PING and the Web Payment Security Interest Group (whose minutes are not public) that took place on 12 December.

Ian Jacobs

===========

Following the joint face-to-faced meeting of WPSIG and PING during TPAC 2019, the groups decided to meet by phone to continue the discussion about Web payments and privacy. In this inaugural call we focused on current and anticipated changes in browser behavior related to tracking and fingerprinting, and how these changes could have an impact on payments risk engines. In particular, we looked at the design goals of the EMV® 3-D Secure protocol, how it is currently
implemented on the Web, and the industry might achieve design goals using emerging technologies such as the Storage Access API and trust tokens.

One interesting theme through the discussion was how to reduce friction in the user experience. We anticipate further discussion of the user intention and notification requirements of Storage Access API, and how the browser, knowing the user is in a payments context, might reduce friction in the user experience.
