An interesting clarifying question might be: how is being "forgotten" either similar to or different from data retention policies? At a high level, I understand data retention as being about a given entity limiting what data they hold about anyone, where being forgotten is about a specific person or specific bit of information being omitted anywhere. Certainly the second problem is practically more difficult to address, if for no other reason that multiple data holders increases complexity. But if I may set that aside for just a moment -- we also approach being forgotten as being more likely to be in conflict with freedom of speech and other social values/rights than data retention. ...why?
