POIWG Agenda 8 September 2011: special guest speaker

Hi all,

Today's call has a special guest speaking. Christine provided the introduction below:

[[

Hello,

Henning Schulzrinne, http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~hgs/ is going to be joining the Sept 8th (member only) meeting of the POI WG to discuss the topic of category primitives for use in the POI Specification.

Protocols co-developed by Henning, such as RTP, RTSP and SIP, are now Internet standards, used by almost all Internet telephony and multimedia applications. His research interests include Internet multimedia systems, ubiquitous computing, and mobile systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

The following is a short description of the subjects he will be speaking about.

The use cases, such as "Where is a 4 star Italian restaurant near me that is still open?", "Where is the cheapest available parking near the theater?" and "What are the specials at nearby restaurants?", all rely on category description. I believe that unfortunately the existing schemes, such as NAICS, are ill-suited for consumer-friendly labeling of POIs. I will present some of the challenges and why industry category schemes are unlikely to be appropriate. I will also briefly discuss an non-WG attempt within the IETF GEOPRIV effort to address this issue by creating a taxonomy more similar to GPS POI labeling and suited for consumer applications.

After Henning's prepared remarks we will have a discussion about labels, globally unique object identifiers and related topics relevant to the POI draft specification.

W3C POI WG members are invited to join the call. Expect it to run over 60 minutes. Non-members are not permitted to dial in, however, will be able to review the minutes of the meeting.

Thank you for your attention.
