  *   CSS Environment Variables Module Level 1<https://drafts.csswg.org/css-env-1/> is being currently drafted, i.e. CSS custom properties but for the UA (or authors’ global props which don’t cascade).

They’re currently meant to be usable in media queries so one could imagine leveraging that in the future to expose reading modes, etc.
