** apologies for cross-posting ** Open Position Research Assistant –UI/ UX Developer for Life Sciences and Semantic Web INSIGHT at NUI Galway (formerly DERI Galway) In collaboration with our industrial partners, the successful applicant will play a key role working for projects in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology research unit. Bioinformatics and Systems Biology research in INSIGHT at NUI Galway focuses on applying Semantic Web technologies for improving and enabling discovery in Life Sciences. Candidates must have a passion for solving real-world problems in the Health Care, Life Sciences and Bioinformatics domain(s). The position will involve developing and applying technologies related to the Semantic Web, Linked Data, Data Visualization, web-based knowledge exploration and discovery. Research Role The successful candidate will contribute to research and commercialisation activities within the Life Sciences research domain of INSIGHT at NUI Galway (formerly DERI). The responsibilities involve: * Working within an enthusiastic team to increase the adoption and usability of Semantic Web technologies in the Life Sciences domain. * Improving the intuitiveness of semantic search platforms and developing interactive, visualizations for biological datasets. * Interacting with Industry and Academic partners, while working on projects that aim to revolutionize the field. * Active involvement in scientific dissemination of research and project results via conference and journal publications. * Support for further project acquisition activities. The position is full-time, located at INSIGHT at NUI Galway. The duration of the positions will be for 12 months in the first instance with possible extensions. The position is available immediately and we expect the successful candidate to start at the earliest possible date. The salary will be in the range 25,425 to 30,928 euro, depending on qualifications and experience. Candidate Profile Applicants would need to have significant experience in web programming and scripting, competent research skills and must show a genuine interest towards working at the intersection of Semantic Web, Big Data and the Life Sciences. The primary requirements are as follows: * University degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Science, Human-computer interaction, Biosciences or other related fields. * Candidates with an academic background in the Biosciences must have previous experience in web development or data visualization. * 2+ years experience in developing web-based applications – the preferred applicant would be a full stack developer (client-server-data). * Expertise with JavaScript/HTML/CSS, front-end frameworks (jQuery or Twitter Bootstrap), knowledge on SVG and HTML5 Canvas, strong programming skills in any one of the following server-side language – PHP, Java or Python, knowledge on querying – SQL or SPARQL. * Familiarity with at least one of the following toolkits :- D3 JS, Kinetic JS, Protovis, Infovis Toolkit (JIT), Tableau, Google Web Toolkit, Gephi or Cytoscape Web * Knowledge of basic biological concepts and terminologies. * The applicant should be creative, enthusiastic, with excellent communication and scientific writing skills and the ability to collaborate with industrial and academic partners. * Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment Other desirable criteria for applicants include: * Experience with SPARQL, RDF, biomedical ontologies and federation. * Demonstrated experience modelling and presenting complex data sets in visually compelling formats. * Working experience with any Life Science Datasets– genomics, pathways, proteomics, or compounds (e.g. TCGA, KEGG, Reactome, ChEBI, etc.) * Familiarity with NodeJS, BackboneJS, CouchDB or MongoDB is desirable. * Familiarity with Agile Software Development.
