A Second Edition of the Recommendation was published in 2012, taking care of some errata, and updating some references. With the publication of the Second Edition the Working Group considers its work complete. The OWL Working Group is now closed. Please join us in congratulating the group. For Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director; Ian Jacobs, Head of W3C Communications =========== More on OWL The OWL (Web Ontology Language) Working Group was formed in 2007, in response to a Member Submission ("OWL 1.1 Member Submission")[1] that, in turn, resulted from the work of the OWLED Workshop Series[2]. The OWL Recommendation, first published in 2004, has become a major tool in an increasing number and range of applications. The widespread use of OWL, that had already taken place prior to 2007, had also revealed requirements for language extensions that are needed in applications. Identifying these extensions and changes was the the goal of the Member Submission and standardizing those, as part of a new release of OWL, was the goal of this Working Group. Also, as part of this update, different OWL Profiles were defined, making it possible to use OWL in simpler, algorithmically and computationally less demanding environments for simpler vocabularies and ontologies.
