[Apologies for cross-postings] First International Workshop on Semantic Web Annotations for Multimedia (SWAMM 2006) http://multimedia.semanticweb.org/SWAMM06/ Tuesday 23 May 2006 - Edinburgh, Scotland to be held as part of the 15th World Wide Web Conference http://www2006.org (22-26 May 2006) --------------- IMPORTANT DATES --------------- Full Paper Submission: January 10th, 2006 Acceptance Notification: February 1st, 2006 Camera-Ready Papers due: February 15th, 2006 Conference: May 23, 2006 ----------- DESCRIPTION ----------- The multimedia community has a long tradition in annotating multimedia assets, a tradition that predates the Semantic Web. The Semantic Web community, on the other hand, has more experience in developing generic languages and tools based on an explicit and formally defined semantics. In theory, the combination should be ideal: the Semantic Web could be significantly enriched by converting existing annotations and vocabularies to RDF or OWL, and multimedia applications could benefit from extra functionality offered by Semantic Web languages and tools. In practice, however, much work still needs to be done. This workshop invites contributions on all topics related to annotating multimedia assets using Semantic Web languages and tools. We anticipate some significant discussion owing to differences in opinions about approaches to take in solving the relevant joint problems, and we invite you to join the workshop to give your views on the following, but no limited to, topics: * Vocabularies / languages / models for describing multimedia assets - Multimedia ontologies - Combining multiple vocabularies - Interoperability between RDF and non-RDF metadata - Interoperability among current standards: MPEG-7, VRA, IPTC, EXIF, AAT, etc. - Flickr/del.icio.us folksonomies / Microformats - Multimedia extensions of Semantic Web languages / Multimedia datatypes * Tools for describing / processing multimedia assets - Image, audio and/or video annotation tools - Automatic and semi automatic annotation tools: from features to semantics - Improve features analysis by using semantic models - Extracting metadata from context (GPS, diary, camera devices, etc.) - Using media semantics in search, presentation and other processing * Applications / Experiences / Feedback - Multimedia portals based on Semantic Web technology - Practical experiences, lessons learned and best practices for annotation on the Semantic Web - Added value of using RDF/OWL semantics in real life multimedia applications - Specific communities: digital libraries, culture heritage, scientific imaging, etc. The workshop is expected to: - bring together the various communities involved - provide an overview of the state of the art in the field - provide a research agenda by listing open problems and promising directions - determine and prioritize potential work that needs to be done within future standardization organizations ------------- PARTICIPATION ------------- Potential workshop participants will be required to submit a short position paper or a full research paper to be invited to the workshop. This will allow the workshop organizers to determine which topics to schedule on the agenda. The presentations during the workshop will be fewer than the number of participants to leave time for discussion amongst the different fields. The presentations will be selected based on the quality of the submissions. ----------- SUBMISSIONS ----------- SWAMM 2006 welcomes the submission of two kind of papers: - short position paper (2 pages maximum in Springer LNCS format): briefly states participants background (industrial or academic) and their main motivation for attending the workshop; - full papers (12 pages maximum in Springer LNCS format): good original research and application papers dealing with all aspects of multimedia and the semantic web, particularly those relating to the subject areas indicated by the topics above. We encourage theoretical, methodological, empirical and applications papers. Papers are due to January 10th, 2006. Paper submissions must be formatted in the style of the Springer Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). For complete details, see http://www.springeronline.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,5-164-2-72376-0, 00.html All papers selected by the program committee will be published by CEUR proceedings (http://ceur-ws.org/). Papers must be submitted directly by email in PDF format to SWAMM2006@image.ntua.gr prior to the paper submission deadline. A selection of the best papers will appear in an extended version in the International Journal of Web Semantics http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/671322/desc ription ---------- ORGANIZERS ---------- - Jacco van Ossenbruggen (CWI, Netherlands) - Giorgos Stamou (NTUA, Greece) - Raphael Troncy (CWI, Netherlands) - Vassilis Tzouvaras (NTUA, Greece) -------------------------------------- PROGRAM COMMITTEE (Under Construction / To Be Confirmed) -------------------------------------- Yiannis Avrithis (National technical University of Athens) Bruno Bachimont (Technology University of Compihgne, France) Anastasios Delopoulos (Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece) Yoshihisa Gonno (Sony, Japan) Christian Halaschek (University of Maryland, USA) Siegfried Handschuh (University of Karlsruhe, Germany) Paola Hobson (Motorola, UK) Stefanos Kollias (National Technical University of Athens, Greece) Yiannis Kompatsiaris (Informatics and Telematics Institute, Greece) Ferran Marques (Technical University of Catalonia, Spain) Libby Miller (Asemantics, UK) Gavin McKenzie (Adobe Systems, Canada) Frank Nack (V2, Institute for the Unstable Media, Netherlands) Jeff Pan (University of Aberdeen, UK) Fernando Perreira (Instituto Superior Tecnico, Portugal) Yannick Prie (University of Lyon, France) Guus Schreiber (Vrije University, Netherlands) Steffen Staab (University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany) Michael Strintzis (Informatics and Telematics Institute, Greece) Chrisa Tsinaraki (Technical University of Crete, Greece) Antoine Isaac (Vrije University, Netherlands)
