Disability

Dear All

In advance of tomorrow's meeting, Carol Clifford our Senior Disability Manager has provided a few notes. Carol has kindly agreed to join tomorrow call to answer any queries:

  * Many disabled people do not identify with disability specific sports/activities, they are looking for something that is inclusive (although this word should be avoided as it can mean different things to different people) ie open for everyone.
  * Classification in sports is seen more as a route to competitive/talent pathway, so again won't be relevant to all disabled people, it may put some disabled people off.
  * There is definitely a role for categorizing impairments if people are looking for an impairment specific sports i.e. Goalball or wheelchair tennis but we know that over 70% of disabled people have more than one impairment so we need to be mindful that by categorizing by impairments is not going to provide a simple answer about what sports they can and want to do. It may be more appropriate to let them know if activities or sports can be adapted.
  * From our research around marketing opportunities disabled people want to know/have access to a contact to be able to find out about the sports offer before they attend.
  * Please see below the categories we use in Active Lives to capture the different impairments that people may have:
Does this disability or illness affect you in any of the following areas?

     *   Long term pain
     *   Chronic health condition
     *   Mobility
     *   Dexterity

     *   Hearing
     *   Learning

     *   Other
     *   None of these
     *   Prefer not to say
