The reason I introduced `display_name` in damus was most people on the
network at the time was using `name` as a petname. I used this for
rendering inline mentions: `@name` and for indexing during tagging or
search.

display_name was for real-names for people interested in sharing that at
the top of their post or on their profile page. I think this desciption
here is accurate but just wanted to give more context.
