Personally, I would question the goal of complete decoupling itself. Too often we get consumed with conceptual purity to the detriment of actual usefulness. Instead of focusing on that conceptual purity, the better focus is looking at what we actually need to do, and coming up with the best way to help us do that. In the case of this specific issue, I actually don't have much objection even to inline styles<http://ambroselittle.svbtle.com/on-challenging-principles-and-best-practices>, much less other forms of coupling. And it is pretty much for the reason you're driving at--unnecessary complexity/bloat.
