Re: Two(+) Music Technology Professorships at MIT

Dear group — apologies for the second post.

I wanted to send an update that the MIT Prof. of Music Technology and Computation deadline is extended to January 1, 2023, so they’re both due the same date. I also can say after several more meetings that the department of Mechanical Engineering’s view of what Mechanical Engineering and music is is very broad — including research that doesn’t build things but works with signals in ways that extract musical data etc., so if you’re on this list, know that your contributions are valued by both searches even if you don’t think of yourself as a computer scientist or mechanical engineer.

I also wanted to reply to Robert Firman’s note that yes: people who study music and accessibility and/or music and disability, and people with disabilities are extremely welcome and encouraged to apply. MIT wants to have a world where music is accessible to (and speaks to) everyone.

Sorry for the clunky application interface. I assure you the job is more up-to-date than the application server.

Original post follows.

Best,
Michael Cuthbert
Associate Professor of Music, MIT

Dear Music Notation Community Group,

I wanted to write to let you know about two new Assistant Professor positions in Music at MIT:

1. Assistant Professor of Music Technology and Computation
2. Assistant Professor in Music Technology in Mechanical Engineering and Music

The first position is jointly offered with the Schwarzman College of Computing. Applications are due December 15, 2022:

Areas of interest include music information retrieval (audio or symbolic), computational approaches to music cognition or perception, human-computer interfaces in music or musical instruments, software and/or algorithms for musical creativity or creation, computation in traditional music research, music and AI/Machine learning, or visualization of music. This listing of areas merely gives suggestions; the search welcomes disciplines not listed, including those that are emerging or not always considered part of music technology.

The second position is jointly offered with Mechanical Engineering. Applications are due January 1, 2023; from its job ad:

Music Technology relies on innovative and integrated research efforts in creative arts, design, acoustics, sensors and actuators, robotics, hardware systems, modeling, computation, and/or machine learning. Topics include but are not limited to: modeling and design for music technology; physics-based approaches to understand and develop musical instruments; integration of sensors, actuators, and advanced materials to performance systems; estimation theory and control for music technology; robotic musical systems and human interactions; design and modeling of integrated media systems; acoustics, signal processing, and computer graphics for musical devices and performance systems; machine learning for the design and manufacturing of musical instruments; and mechanics and artificial intelligence for embedded music systems.

In addition to these two positions, please also note that Electrical Engineering at MIT has an open-topic position, due December 1, with one position having a particular interest in candidates working at the intersection of music and EE.

Candidates may apply to any or all of these positions. Though these are Assistant Professor positions, in special circumstances more senior appointments may be possible. These searches coincide with a larger movement to increase opportunities and visibility of music technology and music computation at MIT, including the potential for new programs and degrees in the near future.

MIT is an equal-opportunity employer: women and underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

Best,
Michael Cuthbert
