With a bit of OpenType programming, you can do just about anything you
want, even to the extreme of what the Cavatina font does (cavatinafont.com).
Expecting a full typesetting engine like that is hardly appropriate, at
least from my perspective as a type designer. The trick here is defining
what features should come "standard" in the text version of the music font
because everyone will have their own needs and desires for where things
should be placed next to each other, what size they should be, how
extensive the OpenType programming should be, etc.

I don't know what the right answer is. I'm only saying it's complicated,
but if there can be a degree of agreement, then that's at least a start.
Graphical examples of what you propose would be very helpful in the
deliberations.
