Dear all, let me introduce myself. I am Luca A. Ludovico, a researcher from the University of Milan. First, I want to thank the founders of this group for the very interesting initiative, and all its participants for the current discussion about music notation formats. I'm not directly involved either in MusicXML or in MEI, even if I've analyzed both of them in the past. As it regards the pros and cons of these two formats, I agree with most of your comments. I'm writing my first message to the group since I would like to answer a question recently raised by Erik: "Is it possible to have a music specification that can represent music on a more general level, rather than "only" a digital version of sheet music?" Well, I have been a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Generated Music, which resulted in the release of an XML standard specifically conceived to meet this requirement. The name of the format is IEEE 1599. If you are interested, there is a number of scientific works, official IEEE documents, and even a book published by Wiley (http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-047059716X.html) which provide details about the format. We have also released Web prototypes, fully compliant with HTML5 and other W3C technologies, that demonstrate the multifarious applications of IEEE 1599 to heterogeneous descriptions of music. For further details and demos, please visit: http://emipiu.di.unimi.it/index.php/component/option,com_k2/Itemid,135/id,10 /layout,category/task,category/view,itemlist/ It is worth underlining that IEEE 1599 is not an alternative to MusicXML or MEI (or whatever will be designed by this group), since it has been conceived to integrate already existing formats. Currently we have applied this approach to graphic and audio files, but we could do the same for notation. We only need a syntax (e.g., an XML attribute) to identify music symbols through a unique ID inside the encoding. In this way, we can link other descriptions (audio, graphical, logical, etc.) with the a very fine granularity, if required. Best regards. Luca A.
