Name: Manuel Tomas CARRASCO BENITEZ Title: Language Technology Organization: European Commission Proposal for presentation Title: Multilingual Web Sites Description Multilingual Web Sites (MWS) refers to sites with multilingual parallel texts; e.g., Europa, the portal of the European Union. MWS are of great practical relevance. There is an urgent need to address the standardization of MWS: * Users should expect similar behaviour from different MWS. * Webmasters should be capable of creating high quality low cost MWS. MWS is the point of view of the webmaster. The majority of users are monolingual and the selection of a language is just an additional barrier to get to the information. There are several gaps not covered by best practices and standards; for example: * Users: the best method for language selection * Webmaster: the interface between the Multilingual Content Management System (mCMS) and the server Further details at "Open architecture for multilingual web sites" http://dragoman.org/mws/oamws.pdf I will not be able to present it personally and I will ask one of the participants to present it. Regards C.
