Hi Media Working Group participants, The current charter [1] of the Media Working Group expires end of May. To continue beyond that date, the group needs to re-charter. Starting point is to prepare a new draft charter that can be reviewed and approved by the group itself, horizontal activities (accessibility, internationalization, privacy and security), W3C management, and W3C's Advisory Committee. Some of them may run in parallel but some delays cannot be compressed and the whole review process often takes 2-3 months. An initial draft charter is available at: https://w3c.github.io/charter-media-wg/ That initial draft is the current charter, on which I applied a few updates: - I incorporated latest boilerplate changes made to W3C's charter template [2]. These changes are clarifications and improvements. They should not change the charter substantially. - I refreshed the list of deliverables [3] to: * align the descriptions with latest process requirements (explicitly documenting the "adopted draft", "exclusion draft", and "exclusion draft charter") * move Audio Focus to the main list of normative deliverables following its adoption by the group this month * add a "Registries" section to highlight the work on registries that the group has been doing (this was mentioned in the previous charter as well under the "Other deliverables" section). The new section lists all registration specs that the group has created so far * extend the note that says that the group may decide to publish registrations spec on the Recommendation track (instead of as Notes as currently done) to also cover WebCodecs registrations. We may drop the note entirely if that seems very unlikely Diff from the current charter is available at [4]. Work that remains on the draft charter: - We need to define expected completion dates for each of the deliverables. These dates are hard to get right, and the ones that are in the current charter typically turned out to be too optimistic. Can we do better this time? - We need to check deliverables and potential deliverables that the group did not really progress in the past couple of years, and re-assess plans. These include EME, Media Playback Quality (to be integrated in HTML), and the DataCue API. Progress on any of them by the time the group gets re-chartered would help to keep them in the list. - If you want to change the scope of the group in any way, now would be a good time to say so! Source is on GitHub: https://github.com/w3c/charter-media-wg Feel free to raise issues on the GitHub repository or on the mailing-list. Timing-wise, ideally we would have a semi-final draft charter ready by early March so that I can initiate other review steps. Thanks, Francois.
