Re: Proposed Maturity Model Sync disclaimer and other pertinent edits

The assessment spreadsheet was agreed to be an experimental prototype. We agreed that we would provide instructions on how to use it. It cannot be a prototype while, at the same time, serve as the definitive method to use the Maturity Model. These edits were overlooked during the “usability” update in June, and we need to correct them.

Furthermore, the Assessment Spreadsheet is not what is being put forward to Note publication status. The narrative document is the Group Note draft, therefore the Excel spreadsheet template should not be more up-to-date with proof points than the narrative document.

2.4 Assessment Template states:

Organizational ICT Accessibility Maturity is assessed using the Accessibility Maturity Model assessment template. The template contains worksheet tabs specific to each dimension<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/#dfn-dimension>. The dimension tabs are organized with the dimension definitions and outcomes for each of the four maturity levels<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/#dfn-maturity-level> and provides a list of the dimension’s proof points<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/#dfn-proof-point>.

Fazio comments:

A prototype has no place being passed off as a final product, as this statement applies. This language was not agreed to.

The Maturity Model is not dependent on any specific tooling. It is dependent on a defined process that looks something like the 3 steps below:

  1. Decide which proof points will be used to assess your organization's [Dimension] accessibility maturity. Not all proof points may apply to every business or organization. The proof points listed here are non-exhaustive examples of criteria. They may, or may not apply. You may identify other proof points in their place and/or additional proof points.

  1. List all of the organization's documentation in relation to the identified proof points.

  1. Determine what accessibility maturity level your proof point documentation supports for {that Dimension].

End Fazio comments

2.4.1 Maturity Model Excel Spreadsheet states:

This is the latest Accessibility Maturity Model excel spreadsheet<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/A11yMaturityTemplate.xlsx> containing seven sheets one for each dimension<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/#dfn-dimension> as well as a cover sheet where a list of all changes made have been recorded.
We encourage you to make a copy of the assessment template worksheet to get started.

EDITOR'S NOTE

The Maturity Model assessment worksheet is intended as a high-fidelity prototype to measure organizational maturity and was developed in an Excel format. The final published format is to be determined, but is envisioned as HTML. It may also be made available in other downloadable, accessible formats.

Fazio comments:

This statement was agreed on by the Task Force. The excel spreadsheet has been serving as a sort of backend wireframe, but it is by no means an endorsed method of implementation. It has always been experimental.

End Fazio comments.

EDITOR'S NOTE number 2 states:

This spreadsheet is experimental and is a work in progress. The proof point<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/#dfn-proof-point> in this document may not be in sync with the supporting Excel spreadsheet template. The Excel spreadsheet template has the most up-to-date proof point<https://w3c.github.io/maturity-model/#dfn-proof-point>.

Fazio comments: This statement that the spreadsheet is experimental and a work in progress was agreed to by the Task Force. It contradicts the previous, unapproved, statement that organizational ICT Accessibility Maturity is assessed using the Accessibility Maturity Model assessment template.

Experimental works in progress should not be more current, or up to date than the Editor’s Draft.
